The rhythm sound of dancehall began in the early 1980's and has spread to be the dominate force driving reggae music today. From its start with dancehall DJ's like Yellowman and Brigadier Jerry and vocalists like Cocoa Tea and Barrington Levy, dancehall has grown into a multiartist arena. Today the hardbeat riddims are layed down and recorded so that they are availible for everyone to sing over with their own personal dancehall style.
The dancehall basements and rapid mixes have spread reggae beyond a new frontier that bears little resemblance of the roots and rock steady. Even more now than ever dancehall can be heard in the popular disco clubs all around the world with artists like Sean Paul.
